Modern Hair Restoration Technology

A few years ago, there were not many options available for patients who had thinning hair or receding hairlines. Over the last decade, hair restoration technology advances have enabled shorter and more effective procedures, with higher follicle survival rates and a more natural-looking outcome. Hair restoration treatment can help reverse hair loss’s adverse effects, leading to a natural, rejuvenated, and attractive appearance.

Who is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for this restorative treatment if:

  • You have been losing your hair for at least five years
  • You have been balding for a long time and wish to add some hair so that you can restore a more youthful appearance
  • You are a man or woman who has lost hair as a result of burns or other trauma
  • You are in good physical and emotional health
  • You have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with this surgery.

During your first hair transplant consultation with Dr. Arroyo, the surgeon will listen to your concerns, examine your hairline, and let you know whether this procedure is for you.

Hair Restoration Techniques

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT is a restoration technique where hair is moved from the permanent zone (sides or back of your scalp) and implanted in the balding areas. This is typically accomplished using groups of 1-4 hairs that are referred to as follicular units. Once the scalp is sedated, the surgeon will remove strips of donor tissue from the permanent area and transplant it into the balding area through microscopic dissection methods. Since this transplantation technique is based on how hair grows, the results are very pleasing when performed by a seasoned surgeon like Dr. Arroyo. In most cases, the FUT hair restoration procedure’s outcome is indistinguishable from the patient’s original hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This is a hair transplantation technique where individual hair follicles are manually removed from the patient’s scalp. Once extracted, the hairs will then be implanted on the thinning areas to achieve the desired outcome. Dr. Arroyo uses this natural graft placement process to recreate your hairline and gain a permanent, natural result.

NeoGraft

This restoration technique utilizes a punch and pressure method to function individual hair follicles gently from the scalp without damaging the surrounding tissue, blood vessels, or nerves. Plastic surgeons then place each follicle in the recipient area to achieve a natural-looking appearance. Neograft is considered to be a closed system, an automated method that better preserves hair follicles to ensure survivability in the transplanted area.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP refers to concentrated blood plasma that contains up to 5x the amount of platelets in normal circulating blood. The PRP used in hair loss treatment is derived from the patient’s blood, spun in a special centrifuge to separate the solid and liquid components. Once the desired PRP extract has been obtained, the surgeon will use a syringe to reintroduce it in the hair loss area. This stimulates the growth of follicles, helping reverse hair loss that may be caused by common baldness.

How much will it cost?

The cost of hair loss treatment can vary dramatically depending on the treatment technique used, the extent of the baldness, and other factors. On average, though, most of Dr. Arroyo’s patients can expect to pay between $4,000 and $19,000 for this transformative treatment.

Where should I go for hair restoration?

This is one of the most pressing questions that people dealing with hair loss grapple with. While some hair restoration techniques are simple procedures that a skilled technician can perform, it is very important that you work with a plastic surgeon. Plastic and cosmetic surgeons are trained to keep an eye on each procedure’s aesthetic outcome and are more likely to yield the natural-looking results you are searching for. During your initial consultation with Dr. Arroyo, he will use his expertise to determine which procedure would be the best approach.

Will everyone know?

You will need to keep your treatment area covered over the first few weeks. Consider wearing a hat because the surgical site will be red and obvious. However, once the healing is complete and your new hair starts to grow, you won’t have to be worried about anything. Many patients who undergo this treatment in a skilled surgeon’s hands benefit from a natural outcome that is not even noticeable by your stylist. If you have specific questions about this transformative procedure’s outcome, make sure to let Dr. Arroyo know well before the surgery.

How long before new hair begins growing?

Natural hair growth tends to be a slow process. After the surgery, you may notice your hair falling as the treatment area heals about a week or so. This does not mean that your restoration procedure failed. Keep in mind that it may take up to 4 months before you can notice any new hair growth. You may need to wait another three months before your transplanted hair can assume the average growth pace of 1/2 inch per month. During one of your pre-op visits with Dr. Arroyo, the doctor will let you know what you can expect during the recovery stretch. His office will also be available to answer your questions and provide the support you need throughout the recovery process.

How do I prepare?

Taking preparatory steps ahead of your hair restoration procedure is important to alleviate some of the anxiety associated with this treatment and improve your chances of a successful outcome. Make sure to stop smoking at least 48 hours before the surgery and not drink within a week before you undergo this procedure. You may need to start taking certain medications before the surgery to prevent the risk of infection. Dr. Arroyo will provide a detailed list of pre-op instructions that you should strictly adhere to to ensure proper recovery and a natural outcome.
