Hair Restoration

Hair Restoration Houston TX

Thick, healthy hair is an attribute of youth and expression of personal identity and style. Unfortunately, though, many men and women have thin hair or receding hairlines that adversely affects their entire facial appearance. This kind of hair loss may be caused by androgenetic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness, usually as a result of factors such as aging, genetics, and hormonal causes. The majority of individuals who experience persistent hair loss tend to suffer from decreased self-confidence and reduced quality of life.

Hair Loss Treatment in Houston, Texas

85% of men aged 50 and above already manifest a degree of hair thinning or receding hairline. Many women will also experience thinning hair as they age. This typically starts gradually and widens to alter the health, thickness, and volume of your hair – negatively impacting your facial aesthetics. Luckily, hair restoration treatment can help reverse the negative effects of hair loss, leading to a natural, rejuvenated, and attractive appearance. Most individuals who undergo this transformative treatment find that they experience improved levels of social confidence.

Houston, TX plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Arroyo offers hair regrowth solutions to patients in his Houston and West Houston backyard, as well as surrounding Texas cities of River Oaks, Bellaire, Katy, Memorial, Briarforest, Sugarland, Pearland, Austin, Kingwood, Jacinto City, Galena Park, Pasadena, Cloverleaf, Aldine, Spring, the Woodlands, and more. The surgeon’s goal is to give men and women a permanent fix to hair loss, leading to an improved appearance and increased quality of life. Dr. Arroyo understands that the needs of different people are unique and goes out of his way to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. More so, the surgeon utilizes the most advanced surgical techniques to achieve the desired hair restoration results while minimizing the risk of complications.

Modern Hair Restoration Technology

A few years back, there were not a lot of options available for patients who had thinning hair or receding hairlines. Procedures typically required lengthy surgeries and produced a less-than-ideal outcome and a “pluggy” appearance. The survival rate for individual follicles was very low, leading to wastage of hair thickness.

Over the last decade, advances in hair restoration technology have enabled shorter and more effective procedures, with higher follicle survival rates and a more natural-looking outcome. Through modern hair restoration techniques, plastic surgeons are able to accomplish the following:

  • Less invasive hair replacement procedures
  • Safer treatment with reduced risk of complications
  • Highly individualized replacement surgery that is customized to the needs of each patient
  • Thicker and fuller hair
  • More natural-looking result with each surgery

Who is a Candidate?

Hair restoration is a cosmetic procedure that removes hair follicles from one area of the body (donor site) and takes them to a balding part of the body (recipient site). This procedure – which is increasingly common – is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. For the right person, hair transplants can dramatically improve appearance and sense of self-confidence. You may be a good candidate for this restorative treatment if:

  • You have been losing your hair for at least 5 years
  • You have been balding for a long time and wish to add some hair so that you can restore a more youthful appearance
  • You are a man or woman who has lost hair as a result of burns or other trauma
  • You are a man or woman who has lost some hair due to a different cosmetic procedure such as a facelift
  • You are in good physical and emotional health
  • You have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with this surgery

During your first hair transplant consultation with Dr. Arroyo, the surgeon will listen to your concerns, examine your hairline, and let you know whether this procedure is for you. The surgeon uses a variety of criteria to determine whether a hair transplant is the best path forward. In some cases, you may be asked to try other non-invasive treatment approaches before choosing this advanced procedure. Dr. Arroyo typically uses a state of the art virtual consultation tool in which he can show you (in real-time) what the procedure will entail, where the scars would be located and what you can expect using your own pictorial anatomy. If you are a smoker, the surgeon will ask that you quit at least 4 weeks before the procedure. More so, Dr. Arroyo emphasizes that all patients ensure that they are doing this procedure strictly for themselves, not because someone else asked this of them.

Hair restoration techniques

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT is a restoration technique where hair is moved from the permanent zone (sides or back of your scalp) where the hair is balding-resistant and implanted in the balding areas. This is typically accomplished using groups of 1-4 hairs that are referred to as follicular units. Once the scalp is sedated, the surgeon will remove strips of donor tissue from the permanent area and transplant it into the recipient (balding) area through microscopic dissection methods. The positioning and arrangement of the follicular grafts will be influenced by the requirements and goals of the patient. Since this transplantation technique is based on how hair grows (naturally), the results are very pleasing when performed by a seasoned surgeon like Dr. Arroyo. In most cases, the outcome of FUT hair restoration procedure is indistinguishable from the patient’s original hair.

Benefits of FUT Hair Restoration

  • A larger number of follicular units can be transplanted in a single session (compared to other techniques such as FUE)
  • Natural and guaranteed results
  • More affordable compared to other hair restoration methods
  • Can address greater degrees of baldness
  • Nearly scarless hair loss treatment technique

Dr. Arroyo’s Approach

Once you go in for your Houston hair transplant, Dr. Arroyo’s team will administer safe sedatives in order to keep you relaxed throughout the treatment. Numbing medication is then administered for a totally painless procedure. Depending on the treatment you need for your desired outcome, you may be offered cable T.V., movie selection, music, or a chat with one of the surgeon’s staffers in order to keep you distracted and entertained while the treatment is taking place. The duration of the FUE and FUT procedures will be determined by the extent of your hair loss and can take between 4-10 hours. Dr. Arroyo and his team perform hair transplantation Houston surgery in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in order to provide a pleasant experience to each patient. Should you have any questions, the surgeon and his team will provide the answers you need, as well as provide opportunities for breaks if not under sedation. The surgeon and his team take great precautions in order to ensure the safety of the patient throughout the hair restoration treatment. Many of Dr. Arroyo’s past patients for this procedure appreciate the vibrant treatment environment and the surgeon’s attentiveness to detail and commitment to results.

The FUT Procedure

This hair restoration technique is also referred to as strip grafting. During the surgery, the first step is to trim the donor area. The surgeon will then administer sedatives in the donor area to facilitate a pain-free, comfortable procedure. The next step is to surgically remove a strip of donor tissue, and close the incisions in the donor area. Using a special microscope, Dr. Arroyo will dissect the donor tissue to prepare individual follicular units. The recipient area will be sedated before incisions are made in an irregular pattern (mimicking natural hair growth). Once this is done, the surgeon will place the micro grafts in these small incisions starting with smaller 1-2 hair grafts (which are positioned in the front of the hairline) and larger grafts behind them. Immediately after your Houston hair transplant, you will have hundreds of very small incisions with hair stubble sticking out. It takes about 3 months for this new hair to start growing, after which it will assume the normal hair growth rate.

Postoperative Instructions

Following your restoration surgery, your scalp will be cleaned before you leave Dr. Arroyo’s Houston transplant center. Your head will then be fully wrapped. Dr. Arroyo will administer appropriate medication to increase your comfort level as you recover from your hair transplant surgery. You will be able to then remove the head wrap one day after surgery and you will be told how to clean your scalp and keep your treatment area clean throughout the recovery duration. Dr. Arroyo may also provide the following additional postoperative instructions:

  • Keep your head in an elevated position using pillows (or a recliner) in order to alleviate swelling over the first 2 days after your restoration surgery.
  • Avoid bending over the first 2-3 days following this procedure. If you have to bend over for any reason whatsoever, make sure to do so at the knee.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol at least 48 hours after this treatment.

It is important you adhere to these instructions in order to ensure an uninterrupted and speedy recovery after your FUT hair restoration.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This is a hair transplantation technique where individual hair follicles are manually removed from the patient’s scalp. Once extracted, the hairs will then be implanted on the thinning areas to achieve the desired outcome. Dr. Christian Arroyo uses this natural process of graft placement to recreate your hairline and achieve a permanent, natural result. Unlike more invasive transplantation techniques such as FUT, this method doesn’t necessitate the removal of donor strips from the scalp.

Benefits of FUE Hair Restoration Surgery

  • No stitches, which means the donor area appears unchanged within a couple of days
  • No visible scarring even when wearing short hair
  • Permanent, natural-looking results
  • This is a safe, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive technique
  • Similar recovery when compared to other techniques such as FUT.

FUE Procedure Approach

During your FUE hair transplant Houston procedure, the surgeon will start by administering a sedative to keep you relaxed.

Once you are comfortable and ready for the surgery, Dr. Arroyo will use a 1-mm diameter special instrument to remove individual follicle units from your scalp. This device makes tiny circular incisions around the follicle unit in order to isolate a distinct graft, which is then removed from the scalp using a special tweezer. Your surgeon will then work with a highly powered stereo microscope to prepare and optimize these grafts for transplantation. The extracted follicle units will be organized in groups depending on the number of hairs they contain. This step is very important in order to achieve a satisfactory outcome with this surgery.

Once the follicular grafts are all ready, Dr. Arroyo will create tiny incisions in the recipient area – matching your natural pattern of hair growth. The grafts will then be inserted strategically depending on the number of hairs contained in each follicle. Dr. Arroyo brings in his extensive experience and artistic eye to make sure that the placement approach will adequately address the thinning areas and lead to natural, dense, hair regrowth. Following your Houston FUE procedure, you can expect the treatment area to heal within just a couple of days. About 3 months after this treatment, new hair should start growing. However, it takes about 6 months since the date of the surgery for the transplanted hair to achieve a normal growth rate.

This restoration technique utilizes a punch and pressure method to function individual hair follicles gently from the scalp without damaging the surrounding tissue, blood vessels, or nerves. Plastic surgeons then place each follicle in the recipient area in order to achieve a natural-looking appearance. Neograft is considered to be a closed system, automated method that better preserves hair follicles to ensure survivability in the transplanted area.

Benefits of Neograft Hair Restoration

Neograft is based on the FUE transplant approach. But while other FUE methods involve the doctor manually removing the follicular units and storing them during a very long extraction process, Neograft is an automated method that utilizes the latest technology in the industry.

Some of the key benefits of NeoGraft FUE technique include:

  • Safe and effective procedure – by combining conventional hair transplant techniques with state of the art technology, plastic surgeons and technicians are able to achieve a safer, less painful, and more effective transplant. Since a higher proportion of hair follicles survive with this method, patients can benefit from a thicker, denser transplanted hair.
  • Natural hair growth – just like FUT, NeoGraft leads to permanent hair restoration. This procedure focuses on removing healthy follicles from appropriate donor sites and taking these to balding areas where they are needed. As a result, most patients who undergo this type of hair restoration experience denser, natural-looking hair coverage, and are able to style their hair without any limitations.

NeoGraft Procedure Approach

During your NeoGraft hair transplant in Houston, the surgeon will start by shaving the back of your head. This part of the head is resistant to pattern balding and is thus used to extract viable donor hair follicles. The surgeon will sedate the donor area before extracting donor follicles in a pneumatic process that emphasizes their survivability.

Each follicle unit that has been harvested will be placed in a special storage chamber, before being transplanted to the recipient area via a ‘no touch’ implantation method. This proprietary approach uses special instruments (instead of a scalpel) to make incision holes at the optimal depth for the best outcome. The donor follicle units are then inserted into these holes to suit the patient’s requirements and goals.

Who is a candidate for NeoGraft

Neograft hair replacement is a great procedure choice for men and women who have enough healthy hair follicles at the back of their head (you cannot be fully bald). Plastic surgeons find that hair on the back of the scalp is more resistant to pattern baldness. You may be a good candidate for this hair loss treatment if you wish to wear your hair short on the sides and the back of your head. This is so because there won’t be a big scar after the surgery. If you have started noticing hair thinning (but have not yet reached full baldness), it may be time to schedule a consultation visit with Dr. Arroyo in order to learn more about NeoGraft and other hair restoration options.

What to Expect After NeoGraft

Following your NeoGraft treatment, you can expect your scalp to be tender – particularly over the first few days. Dr. Arroyo will provide appropriate pain medication to increase your comfort level, as well as antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Patients who undergo this type of hair loss treatment tend to be more comfortable and find recovery easier than those who receive scalpel-based surgery. Dr. Arroyo will tell you how to keep your treatment area clean in the days following the surgery. You will also be provided with detailed post-operative instructions that you should strictly adhere to in order to ensure a speedy and uninterrupted recovery.

You may find the first 2-3 weeks after your NeoGraft session somewhat frustrating. The transplanted hair will fall out as a reaction to the trauma of the surgery. This – however – doesn’t mean that the follicles have not survived. Most patients start to experience new hair growth within 3-4 months. You can expect to witness a dense, healthy coverage of hair in previously bald hairs within 6 months.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP refers to concentrated blood plasma that contains up to 5x the amount of platelets in normal circulating blood. More so, PRP contains a platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), as well as other bioactive proteins that help with wound healing. Recent scientific studies have established that PRP may also serve as an effective (and safe) treatment for male/female pattern hair loss.

PRP Treatment Approach

The PRP that is used in hair loss treatment is derived from the patient’s own blood, which is spun in a special centrifuge to separate the solid and liquid components. Plastic surgeons can use an array of commercially available systems to accomplish this process. These include the XCell PRP, the Emcyte Pure PRP, Cydomedix, Harvest System, and Angle System.

Once the desired PRP extract (solid portion) has been obtained, the surgeon will use a syringe to reintroduce it in the hair loss area. This stimulates the growth of follicles, helping reverse hair loss that may be caused by common baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

If this treatment results in the desired hair regrowth, then Dr. Arroyo will schedule repeat treatments at regular intervals.

Following your first hair transplants Houston consultation, the surgeon will let you know whether PRP is an appropriate treatment for you. If you are a good candidate, Dr. Arroyo may administer the first treatment at the time of your consultation. You will then be asked to receive two more treatments at 6-week intervals. Once you finish all the requisite treatments, the surgeon will conduct an assessment 3 months later. If there are improvements, follow-up treatments will be scheduled about twice yearly.

Each PRP treatment at Dr. Arroyo’s Houston hair transplant center takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. The surgeon will start by administering a sedative to keep you comfortable while you receive the injections. Following the treatment, you will be monitored photographically to assess your individual response to this therapy.

Hair Restoration FAQ

FUT vs FUE Hair Transplantation

FUT and FUE are the two primary hair transplantation techniques. In FUT, a strip of hair is taken from the donor area, organized, and implanted in the recipient area. This technique leads to small cuts that result in minimal scarring. When performed by a highly skilled surgeon, FUT leads to a natural-looking outcome. FUE, on the other hand, takes a follicle of hair at a time (as opposed to a strip. This procedure may be performed by a technician with very little training and not a surgeon. This is why some clinics can perform this technique cheaper, but with less optimal results.

  • Your donor area does not have to be shaved down entirely
  • Ideal for transplantation in a large balding area
  • Extraction of hair from the donor site takes less time
  • Although rare, a linear scar may be visible and you may need to wear long hair in order to conceal it
  • Requires a longer recovery period of 7-10 days.
  • Ideal for individuals who wish to wear short hair
  • Shorter recovery duration of 5-7 days
  • Extracting the donor follicle units take much longer
  • Typically more expensive than FUT hair transplantation
  •  Can still get visible scarring if you wear your hair too short

Where should I go for my hair restoration surgery?

This is one of the most pressing questions that individuals who have a receding hair loss grapple with. While some hair restoration techniques are simple procedures that can be performed by a skilled technician, it is very important that you work with a plastic surgeon. Plastic and cosmetic surgeons are trained to keep an eye on the aesthetic outcome of each procedure and are more likely to yield the natural looking results you are looking for. During your initial consultation visit with Dr. Arroyo, the surgeon will take you through the procedure options and help you settle on the best treatment approach for your needs.

How long before the new hair can start growing?

Natural hair growth tends to be a slow process. About a week or so after the surgery, you may notice your hair falling as the treatment area heals. This does not mean that your restoration procedure failed. Keep in mind that it may take up to 4 months before you can notice any new hair growth. You may need to wait another 3 months before your transplanted hair can assume the normal growth pace of 1/2 inch per month. During one of your pre-op visits with Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Arroyo, the doctor will let you know what you can expect during the recovery stretch. Dr. Arroyo’s office will also be available to answer your questions and provide the support you need throughout the recovery duration.

Will everyone know?

You will need to keep your treatment area covered over the first few weeks. Consider wearing a hat because the surgical area will be red and obvious. However, once the healing is complete and your new hair starts to grow, you won’t have to be worried about anything. Many patients who undergo this treatment in the hands of a skilled surgeon benefit from a natural outcome that is not even noticeable by your stylist. If you have specific questions about the outcome of this transformative procedure, make sure to let Dr. Arroyo know well before the surgery.

How to prepare for your procedure?

Taking preparatory steps ahead of your hair restoration procedure is important in order to alleviate some of the anxiety associated with this treatment, as well as improve your chances of a successful outcome. Make sure to stop smoking at least 48 hours before the surgery, and do not drink within a week before you undergo this procedure. You may need to start taking certain medications before the surgery in order to prevent the risk of infection. Dr. Arroyo will provide a detailed list of pre-op instructions that you should strictly adhere to in order to ensure proper recovery and a natural outcome.
