What is Labiaplasty?

Depending on your specific goals, we may perform one of the following during a labiaplasty:

  • To reduce your labia’s size, we may remove tissue
  • If you wish to enlarge your labia, filler or fat may be injected into your labia
  • We may reconstruct labia with other tissue

If you hope to resolve the signs of aging or childbirth, a labiaplasty can provide a more youthful appearance to your intimate area, boosting your self-confidence.

Do I Need a Labiaplasty?

Whether you need a labiaplasty depends on how you feel about this part of your body and whether shape and size are causing discomfort or embarrassment. For some, the decision to have a labiaplasty is an aesthetic choice. The labia can be larger due to age, genetics, childbirth,  or changes in weight. If you are uncomfortable with the change in size or shape, a labiaplasty can re-sculpt the area to look firm, sculpted, and youthful.

Who is a Candidate for Labiaplasty?

Good candidates for a labiaplasty in Houston are those whose labia has undergone substantial changes due to aging or those with irregularly shaped labia minora, majora, or both. Additionally, candidates may also:

  • Have labial tears that were caused by childbirth
  • Experience physical discomfort during intercourse, sitting, or exercise
  • Feel a lack of confidence due to the size or appearance of their labia

Preparing for Your Labiaplasty

There are a few steps to take in preparation for your labiaplasty. If you take any blood thinners or NSAIDs, you will have to stop taking these. Consult with the prescribing doctor to ensure you can stop taking these medications safely. You should also avoid taking supplements, including herbal supplements and Vitamin E, for about four weeks before surgery. We will advise you not to eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery appointment.

What Does a Labiaplasty Entail?

There are generally two approaches to this procedure, both performed while the patient is under anesthesia. With an edge resection, the edges of the labia are trimmed, removing excess skin. A wedge resection maintains the edges of the labia, removing a sliver of wedge-shaped skin from the middle of the labia minora. The remaining skin is brought together with dissolvable stitches.
If you are having a clitoral hood reduction performed, we will carefully remove the excess skin from the hood without affecting any of the nerves or tissue of the clitoris.

What to Expect During Recovery

Even though a labiaplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, it still warrants some recovery time. It is advised that patients should take between three to seven days off from work. The area will be very swollen and sore afterward, and most can expect nearly all of the swelling to fade after about six weeks. To reduce the swelling and pain, it is recommended that you use an ice pack over your underwear in 20-minute increments.

Additionally, you should NOT engage in the following activities:

  • Sex
  • Swimming
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Heavy lifting

You can resume your normal activities and strenuous exercise within four to six weeks.
