What is AAASF accreditation?

The mission of the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF) is to regulate and ensure patients experience the highest-quality care in an ambulatory surgery setting. The AAAASF is a non-profit organization that accredits more than 1000 outpatient surgical facilities, making it the largest accrediting organization of its kind in the USA.

The AAAASF accrediting program holds every facility to the highest standards in the nation in regards to equipment, safety of operating room safety, operating room personnel, and surgeon and staff credentials. It is considered the gold standard of accreditation.

Safety and quality

AAAASF-accredited facilities are required to meet stringent requirements, including the following:

  • Meet local, state, and federal regulations including sanitation, fire safety, and building codes laid out to protect patients and medical personnel.
  • Comply with all federal laws and regulations, such as OSHA blood-borne pathogens standards, HIPAA, hazardous waste standards, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Supply and utilize technologically-advanced instruments and monitoring devices for patient safety during surgery and recovery
  • Only qualified surgeons with privileges to perform the same surgical procedures in an accredited hospital may perform surgery.
  • Surgeon standards required to operate in an accredited hospital, including peer-review and continuing medical education, are met.
  • Surgeons are certified or eligible for certification in surgical specialties recognized by the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties). AAAASF uniquely requires this high standard of qualification for physicians operating within their accredited facilities
  • The administration of general anesthesia is provided by a board-certified or board-eligible anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse anesthetist.
  • All surgical or recovery personnel are specially-trained and certified surgical technicians, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses.
