Is Breast Reduction for me?

Breast reduction – also referred to as reduction mammoplasty – is a surgical procedure to alleviate physical and functional symptoms caused by overly large and heavy breasts. You may be a good candidate for breast reduction procedure if:

  • You are in good physical and emotional health
  • Your breasts cause back or shoulder pain
  • You have nipples and areola that appear overly large
  • You want breasts that are smaller and more manageable
  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome of this procedure

When you visit Dr. Arroyo’s Houston office, he will listen to your concerns, examine your breasts, and let you know whether this procedure is right for you. If you are a smoker, the surgeon will ask that you quit at least 4 weeks before undergoing this procedure.

Your Breast Reduction Consultation in Houston

During your first breast reduction plastic surgery consultation in Houston, Dr. Arroyo will carefully review your medical history to ascertain that you are in good shape to undergo this procedure. Detailed measurements of your breasts will be taken, and the surgeon will also evaluate your skin quality and nipple positioning. Once Dr. Arroyo has all the necessary information, he will discuss a customized treatment plan to meet your goals. He will do this by using a state of the art virtual consultation tool in which he will be able to show you in real time what the procedure would entail, where the scars would be located and what you can expect using your own pictorial anatomy. This initial consultation visit is very important not only to create your breast reduction surgery road map but also to get all your questions answered. Make sure to clearly discuss your expectations with the surgeon, as well as gain insight into the recovery process.

Dr. Arroyo’s unique sedation method

During a breast reduction procedure, Dr. Christian Arroyo utilizes a unique sedation method that is referred to as Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) Sedation. This technique is considered to be generally safer and allows the patient to breathe on their own without any intubation during surgery. Furthermore, patients do not suffer from side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or pain associated with general anesthesia. Once you have been prepped for surgery, the surgeon’s team will administer a specific type of oral medication to ease the nerves and assist with pain control. Instead of the typical intravenous medication, this is an oral version that many of his breast reduction patients find to be very comfortable and preferable. It helps to utilize fewer intravenous medications during surgery and has lower chances of resulting in anesthesia side effects such as respiratory depression. After this the patient is brought into the operating room where a painless IV is started and intravenous medications are administered to give the patient a nice comfortable sedation, completely unaware of anything and without intubation. The patient is very closely monitored by Dr. Arroyo’s surgical staff with patient safety being the #1 priority. After the surgery is done, you wake up relaxed without pain, nausea or vomiting and ready to go home and recover.

Procedure Approach

During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Arroyo and his anesthesia team will administer intravenous sedation to keep the patient comfortable throughout the procedure. The surgeon will create a small incision that resembles an anchor or inverted keyhole going from the nipple down to the breast crease. A combination of liposuction and directly removing the breast tissue will be used to get rid of excess fat from the breast, and loose skin will be tightened. Dr. Arroyo pays great attention to breast symmetry and nipple positioning when performing this procedure. Once the desired change has been achieved, the surgeon will close incisions and place bandages on the treatment area. This surgery takes about 1-3 hours to complete (for each breast). Because breast reduction is considered to be an outpatient procedure, the majority of patients are able to go home on the same day as the surgery for recovery.

You will be able to resume your regular daily routine after about 10 days. However, heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
