Breasts that are too large and heavy may lead to neck and upper back pain, rashes beneath the breasts, and bra grooves on the shoulders. Furthermore, many women with macromastia (abnormally large breasts) feel self-conscious when wearing certain clothing types and may be unable to engage in certain physical activities comfortably. At Arroyo Plastic Surgery, Dr. Arroyo offers breast reduction surgery to help ease these issues.

What Is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction – also referred to as reduction mammoplasty – is a cosmetic surgery procedure that resizes and reshapes the female breasts to alleviate macromastia symptoms. Dr. Arroyo will remove excess tissue while sculpting the breasts to achieve a rounded, full, natural, and beautiful appearance. Most women who need and receive a breast reduction report a tremendous boost in self-confidence and improved quality of life.

Your Breast Reduction Consultation

During your first consultation, Dr. Arroyo will carefully review your medical history to ensure that you are in good shape to undergo this procedure. Detailed measurements of your breasts will be taken, and he will also evaluate your skin quality and nipple positioning. Once Dr. Arroyo has all the necessary information, he will discuss a customized treatment plan to meet your goals. By using a state-of-the-art virtual consultation tool, he will be able to show you what the procedure would entail, where scars would be located and what you can expect using your pictorial anatomy. This initial consultation is crucial to creating your breast reduction surgery road map and answering all your questions. Make sure to discuss your expectations with the surgeon and gain insight into the recovery process.

Dr. Arroyo's Procedure Approach

Dr. Arroyo will create a small incision from the nipple down to the breast crease during breast reduction surgery. A combination of liposuction and directly removing the breast tissue will eliminate excess fat, and loose skin will be tightened. Dr. Arroyo pays great attention to breast symmetry and nipple positioning when performing this procedure. Once the desired change has been achieved, he will close incisions and place bandages on the treatment area. This surgery takes about 1-3 hours to complete (for each breast). Because breast reduction is considered an outpatient procedure, most patients can go home on the same day as the surgery for recovery.

During a breast reduction procedure, Dr. Christian Arroyo uses the Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) Sedation method. This technique’s benefits include fewer intravenous medications, no intubation during surgery, and none of the side effects commonly associated with general anesthesia. The process starts with an oral medication after you are prepped for surgery. After this, you’ll be brought into the operating room and started on a painless IV where intravenous medications are administered, and sedation begins. Throughout the entire process, you will be monitored closely by Dr. Arroyo and his surgical team, as safety is the number one priority.

Your Recovery After Breast Reduction

After your procedure, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and a surgical bra or elastic bandage. The gauze is removed after a few days, but you will need to continue wearing the surgical bra/bandage for at least a week.

Most patients experience swelling and soreness for several weeks to months as their breasts heal. Dr. Arroyo will provide pain medication to help alleviate discomfort during recovery. You will be able to resume your regular daily routine after about ten days.

However, heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided for at least six weeks. The majority of breast reduction patients can resume driving in 1-2 weeks and work in 2-3 weeks.

Will there be scarring?

Scars are an inevitable consequence of any surgical procedure where an incision is made into the skin. Following your reduction surgery consultation, Dr. Arroyo will determine and discuss with you using a state-of-the-art virtual tool the best incision pattern to use to minimize scarring. Furthermore, the surgeon takes extra care to conceal any resulting scars in areas where they are hardly visible.

Will breasts grow larger again?

Breast reduction is considered to be a permanent solution for addressing excessively large breasts. However, keep in mind that if you become pregnant or gain weight, this can negatively impact this surgery outcome. Dr. Arroyo recommends that you adhere to a healthy diet and exercise regimen to maintain this procedure’s results.

How much is the procedure?

The cost of breast reduction surgery varies, but most patients can expect to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 for this treatment. Insurance companies may cover part or all of the costs of breast reduction surgery if they experience physical problems such as neck pain, skin problems, and back pain. Dr. Arroyo can take the necessary measurements and gather the information required by your insurer before surgery.

Will a breast reduction improve nipple sensation?

The weight of large breasts can stretch nerves and lead to diminished nipple sensation. Sometimes, reduction mammoplasty can help improve this lost sensation. Make sure to discuss any nipple sensation concerns you may have with Dr. Arroyo well before the surgery.
