Rhinoplasty – often referred to as a nose job – is a plastic surgery procedure used to alleviate the nose’s functional and aesthetic imperfections. Many patients undergo this procedure in order to correct unappealing defects such as flaring nostrils, dorsal hump, the tip of the nose, nasal crookedness, or improper size. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are also a recommended procedures for individuals who may have breathing problems due to a deviated septum, damage from trauma, or other structural issues.

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for a nose job if:

  • You are in good physical and emotional health.
  • You are self-conscious or unhappy about the current appearance of your nose.
  • You have an injury or trauma-related nasal deformity that needs to be corrected.
  • You have a nose that is misshapen or crooked.
  • You are unhappy with the size of your nose (too small or too large)
  • You wish to correct noticeable cosmetic defects such as humps, depressions, or flared nostrils
  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome of this treatment

Dr. Arroyo cares about his patients and will make even the shyest or most anxious patient feel at ease. Once you visit for an initial rhinoplasty plastic surgery consultation, he will listen to your concerns, examine your problem areas, and let you know whether this treatment is for you.

Rhinoplasty Options

Dr. Arroyo offers two primary types of rhinoplasty (open and closed rhinoplasty) to meet the surgery goals. He may also perform a revision treatment or non-surgical reshaping to suit the needs of the patient.

Closed rhinoplasty

In a closed rhinoplasty technique, the surgeon will create a small incision via the nostrils. Once the incision is made, the nose’s skin will be separated from the bone and cartilage (supporting framework). The surgeon will reshape, augment, rearrange the bone and cartilage, and the nasal tissues to achieve the desired shape. Dr. Arroyo will then close the incision and cover the treatment area. Placing incisions inside the nostrils allows for optimal results where scarring is not visible. Closed nose jobs are only ideal for patients who need minor reshaping and improvements in their nose’s appearance.

Open rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is a more extensive form of rhinoplasty used to make significant changes to the nasal anatomy. The surgeon will create a small incision on the tissue between the nostrils, offering a broader and better view of the confines of the nose. The surgeon will then peel back the nose’s skin to reveal the internal structures and reshape them in line with the surgery goals. Once the reshaping is complete, Dr. Arroyo will close the incisions and place bandages on the nose. The surgeon keeps the incisions to a minimum (typically around 5mm) to prevent noticeable scarring after open rhinoplasty surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty, also referred to as secondary rhinoplasty, is performed to correct dissatisfaction or problems that persist after previous nose surgery. It is a complex procedure where Dr. Arroyo will work carefully to deliver the desired results but were not attained with the first procedure. Revision rhinoplasty may be an open or closed procedure.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty

Some rhinoplasty patients – particularly those with mild cosmetic imperfections – can benefit from non-invasive nose reshaping. Dr. Arroyo may use various treatments such as injectable fillers to smooth out sharp angles, change the angle of the tip, or restore symmetry to the nose. For example, if you have a bump, the surgeon may use fillers to even out your nose. Keep in mind, though, that nonsurgical treatments only offer temporary relief and not a permanent solution.

TIVA sedation method

During your rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Christian Arroyo utilizes a unique sedation method referred to as Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) Sedation. It is often considered safer than general anesthesia, and it allows the patient to breathe independently without intubation. It is also free from side effects that are common associated with general anesthesia.

First, you will be given oral medication rather than an intravenous to ease your nerves and assist with pain. Then you will be started on a painless IV for safe and comfortable sedation. Throughout the process, you’ll be monitored closely by Dr. Arroyo and his surgical staff to ensure you are safe and comfortable.

Procedure approach

Rhinoplasty is considered to be an outpatient procedure that is performed in Dr. Arroyo’s AAAASF certified in-office operating room. The surgery will start with intravenous sedation to keep you comfortable throughout. Typically, the surgery takes 2-3 hours to complete, after which Dr. Arroyo’s team will monitor you for a short time before you are allowed to go home for recovery. Ensure you have a family member or trusted friend to drive you home once you are discharged from Dr. Arroyo’s facility.

Recovery after rhinoplasty

Recovery after rhinoplasty varies from one patient to the other. Immediately after the surgery, your nose may be placed in a splint to provide added support. You can expect to experience swelling, bruising, and pain over the first few days, and medication will be provided to alleviate this discomfort. A post-op appointment will be needed after about six days to monitor your progress.

Most facial rhinoplasty Houston patients are encouraged to begin moving around after surgery and resume light work within two weeks. At six weeks, you can resume more vigorous activity. If you have any questions or are worried about anything during this healing process, Dr. Arroyo’s office will always be available to provide the support you need.
